Areas of Opportunity

GROUND CREW

A groundsman for us is a vital team member who supports tree care operations from the ground. Their primary responsibilities involve assisting climbers and arborists by handling tasks such as gathering and organizing tools, clearing debris, and ensuring the job site remains safe and efficient.

Key duties of a groundsman include:

  • Cleaning Up Debris: After trees or branches are cut, the groundsman collects, processes, and disposes of the debris, often using tools like rakes, chainsaws, or wood chippers.
  • Assisting Climbers: Groundsmen provide climbers with tools, ropes, and equipment when necessary, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted work in the tree.
  • Operating Equipment: They may operate machinery such as chainsaws, stump grinders, or chippers to manage tree removal or pruning operations.
  • Maintaining Safety: Groundsmen help maintain a safe job site by marking off work areas, keeping an eye out for hazards, and communicating with other team members to ensure the work is performed safely and efficiently.

A groundsman role is often an entry-level position in the tree care industry, offering a great opportunity to gain experience and work towards becoming a skilled arborist.

Climber

A climber for us plays a critical role in performing the more advanced and technical aspects of tree care, especially those that require working at heights. Climbers are responsible for physically scaling trees to prune, trim, or remove branches, as well as to inspect and care for the tree’s health and structure. They are often the most skilled and trained members of a tree care team.

Key duties of a climber include:

  1. Pruning and Trimming: Climbers use ropes, harnesses, and specialized equipment to ascend trees and prune branches, removing deadwood, hazardous limbs, or promoting the tree’s health and growth.
  2. Tree Removal: When a tree needs to be removed, climbers cut branches and sections of the tree from the top down in a controlled manner, ensuring safety and minimizing risk to property and crew members.
  3. Cabling and Bracing: Climbers may install support systems, such as cables or braces, to reinforce weak or damaged branches and improve tree stability.
  4. Safety and Precision: Climbers must ensure safety by carefully planning their climbs and cuts. They often work in coordination with groundsmen, lowering branches to the ground using rigging systems to avoid damage or injury.
  5. Inspections and Health Assessments: Climbers may inspect trees for signs of disease, pests, or structural problems that aren’t visible from the ground. This allows them to recommend appropriate treatment or care.

Climbers are highly trained in rigging, and safety practices, and their work is critical to ensuring the safety, health, and aesthetics of trees. Their role requires physical fitness, technical knowledge, and a strong focus on safety.
